Though he was just eight years old at the time, his performance had an enormous impact on the success of the film. Born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in rural Independence, Mississippi, Humphreys was cast from an open call which drew hundreds of hopefuls to Memphis shortly before the film went into production. His mother was inspired to bring him to audition after seeing a television commercial that said the filmmakers were looking for a boy who looked like "a young Tom Hanks, with light eyes and a quirky disposition." "That's Michael," his mother realized.

As producer Steve Starkey recalled, "Ellen Lewis, our casting director,
brought this tape of his audition out to us in Los Angeles. After
seeing it, director Bob Zemeckis had a big smile on his face, because
he'd just seen this unique character that so far he hadn't seen
anywhere." As a result, Michael Humphreys proceeded to the next phase
of casting, which was a screen test in Hollywood. Starkey said, "We
invited a number of boys out to actually read in front of the camera,
because sometimes these children will just freeze up and won't be able
to perform at all. So Michael Humphreys came out, and he was as natural
as ever. He didn't have any fear at all. All he wanted was a peanut
butter sandwich off the catering table."

The filmmakers all agreed that young Michael Humphreys proved to be a
"vault of treasure." In fact, the boy provided the key to unlocking Tom
Hanks' Oscar-winning performance. "I was afraid of any sort of accent,"
Hanks admitted. "People know who I am."

"I was very, very wary of the whole vocal thing, because it's not my gig - I don't know how to do it," Hanks revealed. "I was always trying to
convince Bob that there was some way of soft-pedaling it somehow, even
though it is so evocative and it's grammatically written out in Winston
Groom's novel... I told Bob, 'This is new turf for me, and I don't know
how to do this. I think the audience is going to hate us, like I'm
doing Ken Berry in Mayberry RFD.' Bob says, 'Look, you've just got to
figure out a way of doing it."

So Hanks did - he chose to study young Michael Humphreys and base
Forrest's vocal style on the way the boy spoke. Fortunately, all of the
scenes with "Young Forrest" were shot before Hanks began filming, so
there was plenty of time for Hanks to observe him. "Michael's got this
way of talking - he's got this kind of vocal quality that's hard to
define, but it's definitely there," said Hanks. "Being eight years old,
and having a very particular personality, and being from Mississippi,
he had this kind of vocal cadence or signature that was really kind of
strange. It was weird! I studied him and transposed the way he spoke
and some of his phrasing, and put it into the script."

Throughout filming, Hanks hoped that he had found a way of presenting Forrest's voice that would be appealing. "I have seen movies where somebody has adopted a sort of bizarre way of talking, and it seems like as much thought went into it as them wearing a pair of glasses in a movie," he said. "It took months for me to figure it out."

Fortunately, his dedication paid off. Audiences worldwide adored Forrest Gump, making it the most successful summer drama in history, and the Academy awarded Tom Hanks with the Best Actor Oscar for the second year in a row.

Watch the enhanced version of Forrest Gump tonight, March 9 at 7PM | 6C. So he devises a challenge wherein Penelope will marry the man who can string his bow and fire an arrow through a row of twelve axes -- a feat of strength and accuracy only Odysseus himself could accomplish, and the means by which he then kills his enemies. The moment is triumphant and righteous. And yet, because the suitors are unarmed, they are not defeated so much as slaughtered. Though their deaths are justified, there remains an inkling of dishonor in death by bow and arrow.

In The Iliad, this sentiment is even more apparent. Scholars have remarked on how because archers do not meet their marks face to face, their skill is more associated with cunning than physical prowess.

In filming his adaptation of The Iliad, director Wolfgang Petersen took many liberties with the source material, notoriously omitting the gods' story lines from his version. But where Troy may have faltered in its depiction of mythology it more than made up for with Orlando Bloom's Paris, an archer so lacking in courage and fortitude it's hard to imagine even Homer writing him any other way. Paris is the anti-hero of the story, the prince whose vanity, narcissism and cowardice plunges Troy into war and destruction. Given what we know about Homer, is it any surprise that Paris' only redeeming quality is his skill with a bow?

The irony of the Iliad and Troy, of course, is that Paris defeats the greatest warrior who ever lived, Achilles. But even more ironic is knowing all the attributes that made Bloom the perfect hero archer in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (think of Legolas at the Battle of Helms Deep), serve to denigrate him in Troy. Paris' moment of glory with Achilles is anything but, and we can't help but pity him as he tries to find redemption in the act. But Petersen is not nearly as ruthless towards Paris as Homer was. When you're watching Bloom safely escape the city with his bride, ponder the fitting end that Homer gave his character: Death by arrow.

Troy is playing Saturday, March 8 at 8 PM | 7C on AMC.

The Internet, it seems, was made for science fiction. It is a pulsating, planet-wide hive-mind of cybertronic information the likes of which Isaac Asimov could scarcely dream. And yet, sifting through the billions of websites online there is a surprising dearth of great sci-fi content. That is, except for SF Signal, which since its launch in 2003 has been the alpha and omega of science fiction blogs on the net.

Operated by the brilliant John DeNardo and his enigmatic compatriot -- a mystery man cloaked in shadows and known only as JP -- SF Signal is one of the most authoritative and comprehensive sci-fi blogs, even with megasites like io9 publishing multitudes of spoilers and thirty separate lists a day. First looks can be deceiving: while other blogs run loose with post after post, SF Signal rarely updates more than a handful of times a day. But each is a virtual lexicon of the science fiction news, happenings, analysis and reviews.

How did it get started? From humble beginnings: Accoring to DeNardo, "JP had the idea of jumping on the blog bandwagon. I wondered whether anyone really wanted to know details on our personal lives. He suggested a themed blog and, since we both like science fiction, SF Signal was born. Well, hatched would be more like it. The idea was that we could have a place to share sf-related things, kind of the web-based equivalent of shooting a 'look at this' e-mail."

It may seem that in the current blogosphere, where posts run rampant, diggbait is ubiquitous and everyone seems intent on drowning everyone else out in volume, SF Signal might not fit in as well as it once did. But the site is the perfect digest for sci-fi fans: a concise, one-stop source for everything happening in the genre. "When we started SF Signal," DeNardo says, "we were trying to convey the idea of sharing information." SF Signal succeeded. The bottom line is that no sci-fi blog on the conveys the same wealth of information in such a compact, elegant package.

The season finale of Breaking Bad is fast approaching, and the Talk forum is buzzing with anticipation. Jdub began by reflecting on Episode 6, which was seen as a turning point for Walt: "Walt has been content to walk the sidelines, live in the safety of the 'middle'. But no longer. In this episode he found out he has to be all in...he isn't the good guy just cooking a little meth to take care of a little matter while Jesse is some thug doing who knows what. NO. They are in this thing together." Taxista also saw a turning point in Walt and Jesse's relationship: "Notice Jesse's parents weren't called while he was in hospital. Walt and Jesse now only have each other."

Vanveen began a topic discussing what he saw as a recurring theme on the forum: "The one comment that I saw again and again that really troubles me is the idea that Walt is a fantastic failure for choosing a career as a high school chemistry teacher...The idea that being a highly educated and clearly dedicated (he remembers things about even a very poor student like Jesse that many teachers would not have) high school teacher is an automatic mark of failure is appalling." Pamala agreed that one of the biggest tragedies of Walt's situation is the fact that as a teacher he receives neither adequate compensation nor health insurance: "Walt shouldn't be in this situation! A good and decent man, one who's dedicated his life to teaching children ... shaping the future, would ask to be let out of an ambulance on a street corner because he can't afford medical care is as ugly a moment as the drugs themselves."

Meanwhile in this week's Win a Winnebago contest, posters were asked whether they thought Walt had passed the point of no return. Jtp seems to think so: "He has cooked crystal and killed two men, not to mention blowing up a lawyer's car. He has committed the First Mistake in the Drug World- i.e. drawing attention to himself by producing something so pure that it stands out like a sore thumb. Enter Tony Soprano, or Anton Chigurh." ELIZ, however, is not so sure: "There is no point of no return. We get a new day every day. Every day we choose to do what we do and I argue that indecision is a choice in itself. Walt is choosing to do what he feels on the inside despite what culture dictates."

We've got more toy Winnebagoes to give away, so keep logging on to the Breaking Bad blog for each week's giveaway. Log onto the Talk forum to join in any of these conversations, or start a Breaking Bad topic of your own! And don't miss AMCtv.com's live chat with Bryan Cranston immediately following the series finale at 11PM | 10C.
